Vision: Live Missionally

Ephesians 4:1-16

Ephesians 4:1-16

You live missionally when you use your spiritual gift(s) to do the work of ministry.

Living Missionally Requires Everyone to…

Live Out Church Unity(4:1-6)

The saving call of God on your life leads to “humility...gentleness...patience” with a “bearing with one another” which tests the authenticity of your “love” (4:1-2; Jn. 13:34-35; 15:12-17; Rom. 13:8; 1 Jn. 3:11, 23; 4:7-12).

The same Spirit who brings us into the church is the same Spirit who unites us with our various differences to be united in a common “bond of peace” as we interact with one another (4:3; 1 Cor. 12:12-13).

The church is “one body” in the person of our “one Lord” as the shared belief of “one faith” initiated by the “one baptism” of the “one Spirit” places you into the family of God (4:5-6; Rom. 10:9; 1 Cor. 1:13; Gal. 3:27; Phil. 2:10-11).

To Live Out Church Unity, You Must…

1)  Possess Jesus’ Mindset

“Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others. Have this mindset in yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…”-Philippians 2:2-5

Jesus’ servant mindset causes you to empty yourself in cross-like humiliation (Mt. 20:26; 23:11; Mk. 9:35; 10:43-44).

2)  Know What Really Matters

“I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.”-1 Corinthians 9:22-23

“In essentials, unity, in non-essentials, liberty, and in all things, charity.”-Richard Baxter

Living Missionally Requires Everyone to…

Do the Work of Ministry(4:7-12)

“Each” person must use the spiritual gift received in “grace” to reflect Jesus’ “gift” (4:7; Rom. 12:6-8; 1 Cor. 1:7; 12:4-31; 1 Tim. 4:14; 2 Tim. 1:6).

The “gifts” Jesus gives “to men” when he “ascended” are the church’s leaders who act in Jesus’ place (4:8-10).

“Shepherds and teachers” are Jesus’ gifts to the church who are given to lead (“shepherds”) and teach (“teachers”) (4:11; Acts 13:1; 1 Cor. 12:25; Gal. 6:6; 1 Tim. 5:17).

Pastors and teachers are given to the church to “equip” the church to “do the work of ministry” through leadership and teaching (4:11-12).

Equipping the church to do “the work of ministry” brings unity through the diversity of spiritual gifts leading to a “building up the body of Christ” (4:12).

To Do the Work of Ministry, You Must…

1) Discover Your Spiritual Gift

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”-1 Peter 4:10

Your spiritual gift(s) can be ascertained through assessing your abilities (what you are good at doing), your passions (what you love to do), and your life experiences (your past history).

2)  Develop Your Spiritual Gift

“I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”-2 Timothy 1:7

In 2019, Kirby Woods is developing a culture of leadership development to utilize everyone’s spiritual giftedness on ministry teams and equipping training sessions to fan into flame your spiritual gift(s) (2 Tim. 2:2).

3) Find Your Ministry

“You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”-1 Peter 2:5

Through serving on a Kirby Woods ministry team you will get the opportunity to do the work of ministry to bring others to God (Rom. 12:4-6).

Living Missionally Requires Everyone to…

Grow through Service to Others(4:13-16)

Living missionally by doing ministry brings “unity of the faith” and makes the church spiritually “mature” in a “knowledge” of Jesus so you are anchored (not “tossed”) and grounded (not “carried about”) (4:13-14).

Truth that is learned is truth that is lived in love toward others causing the church to “grow up in every way” (4:15).

Living missionally equips “each part” of the church to be “working properly” which brings an external evangelistic effectiveness making “the body grow so that it builds itself up in love” (4:16).

To Grow Through Serving, You Must…

1) Meet Regularly with Other Believers

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”-Hebrews 10:24-25

Kirby Woods must be an incubator for making disciples and an ecosystem for growing disciples who make disciples through doing ministry.

2) Live What You are Given

“Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”-Jesus in Luke 8:18

Jesus will only give you as much truth as you are willing to live and communicate with others.

Challenge- Ask Jesus what ministry He wants you to do.
