The Soils

Luke 8:4-21

Luke 8:4-21

You can experience transformation when you hear, internalize and live the Word of God.

You Will Experience Transformation When You...

HEAR God’s Word(8:4-10)

“Many believed in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people, and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.”-John 2:23-25

The “Parable of the Soils” is designed to test your heart’s receptivity to hearing and believing God’s Word (Mt. 13:1-15; Mk. 4:1-12; Lk. 8:4-15).

You can hear with your physical ears but not hear with spiritual understanding because your heart is closed and hardened (8:8; Mt. 13:13-15).

Parables give knowledge to those who believe while bringing a blinding and deafening judgment to those who do not believe (8:9-10; Mt. 13:10-17; Mk. 4:10-72; Lk. 9:2-10).

How to Hear God’s Word…

1)  BELIEVE What You Hear

“For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.”-Hebrews 4:2

You will never hear the Word of God without believing the Word of God (Rom. 10:17; Heb. 4:2).

2)  READ, LISTEN, MEMORIZE and MEDITATE

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…”-2 Timothy 3:16

You need to hear from God because you were made by God for God.

You Will Experience Transformation When You...

INTERNALIZE God’s Word(8:11-15)

“You have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God…”-1 Peter 1:23

You can have a momentary experience through hearing God’s Word only to have it “taken away” before it gets into your heart (8:12).

“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”-1 Corinthians 4:4

“Testing” will either strengthen your faith or cause you to fall away (8:13; Jms. 1:3; 1 Pet. 1:7)

“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.”-Hebrews 3:12

Your divided heart can get “choked” by the demands (“cares”) and temptations (“riches and pleasures”) of life (8:14).

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.”-1 John 2:19

When you internalize God’s Word in “an honest and good heart” you will patiently “bear fruit” (8:15; Ps. 1:1-6; Mt. 3:8; 7:16-20; Jn. 15:1-27; Col. 1:10).

“By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”-Jesus in John 15:8

How to Internalize God’s Word…

1) EXAMINE Your Heart

Before you can experience true transformation from God’s Word you need a heart examination (Ps. 26:2; Prov. 4:23; Jer. 17:10) that leads to either a heart transplant (Ezek. 11:19; 36:26) or a heart catherization (Ps. 51:10; Jms. 4:8).

“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”-2 Corinthians 13:5

2)  DISCIPLINE Your Heart

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”-Psalm 63:1

Daily dedicated time alone with God through his Word, prayer and worship will strengthen your heart for God (Dan. 6:10; 2 Tim. 2:15).

You Will Experience Transformation When You...

LIVE God’s Word(8:16-21)

When you hear and internalize God’s “light” it brings light into the “hidden” and “secret” darkness of others (8:16-17; Jn. 3:19-20; 8:12; Eph. 5:11-13).

If you will not live out God’s Word, it will be “taken away” from you (8:18).

Learning God’s Word requires living God’s Word which leads to increasingly maturing levels of learning and living (8:18).

Learning and living God’s Word leads to increasing levels of intimacy with God and with others in the family of God (8:21; 2 Pet. 3:18).

How to Live God’s Word…

1) TRAIN Yourself to Mature

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”-Hebrews 5:14

Learning and living God’s Word is a disciplined lifetime pursuit.

2) BUILD Your Life On It

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”-Jesus in Matthew 7:24-25

God will only reveal to you as much truth as you are willing to live out.
