The Rich Fool

Luke 12:13-34

Luke 12:13-34

True life is when you invest your life to be rich toward God and others.

How to Find True Life…

Choose Contentment Over Covetousness(12:13-21)

Coveting is desiring what you do not have and what God has not given you the resources to possess (12:15; Ex. 20:17; Deut. 5:21; Mic. 2:2; Mk. 7:21-22; Jms. 4:2).

“Covetousness” is when you no longer own your possessions, but your possessions own you (12:15).

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”-Colossians 3:5

“You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”-James 4:2-3

The “Parable of the Rich Fool” is designed to reveal your divine accountability to be rich toward God and not yourself (12:16-18).

Greed is when you have what you need and still want more (12:16-18).

“Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into senseless and harmful desires that plunge into ruin and destruction.”-1 Timothy 6:9

“Treasure” seductively blinds your soul into greed where your life is about your ease, comfort, and entertainment (12:19-21).

Finding True Life Requires You to…

1)  Live on the Alert

The danger of covetousness is that it is a form of idolatry where your desire for things replicates the desire you should have for God (Col. 3:5; Eph. 5:5).

“Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again, I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”-Jesus in Matthew 19:23-24

2) Pursue Godliness with Contentment

“Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction…”-1 Timothy 6:6-9

“Self-indulgence at this time is helping the Enemy!”-British WWII Poster by Winston Churchill

How to Find True Life…

Live for God Not Yourself(12:20-31)

If you believe your fortune secures your future, you are a “fool,” and God will take your fortune and your future (12:20).

The “fool” believes this life is about this life and lives for his present comfort and ease with no thought of God and eternity (12:20; Ps. 14:1; 53:1).

When greed is your god, you will hoard “treasure” but if you are “rich toward God” you live knowing your life is fromGod so you can live forGod (12:21).

When you wrap your identity into your present comfort and future security, you will become anxious about “your life” (12:22).

If you live for the American dream, your life can become a living hell because of anxiety “about your life” as you live for status items like “food” and “clothing” (12:22-23).

Anxiety can arise from “little faith” in God’s power to fulfill his promises of providing “much more” for you both “today” and “tomorrow” (12:27-28; Mt. 8:26; 14:31; 17:20; Mk. 11:23; Heb. 11:6; Jms. 1:6-8).

The world’s lie is that life is a pursuit where you “seek after things” rather than living to “seek first” God’s kingdom (12:29-31).

Finding True Life Requires You to…

1) Choose a Master

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”-Matthew 6:24

You will either worship money or worship God with your money.

2) Give from Grace’s Overflow

“God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”-2 Corinthians 9:8

A life that is rich toward God is a life lived from the overflow of grace that leads giving to others from the overflow of what God is giving you in Jesus.

How to Find True Life…

Set Your Heart on Eternal Treasure(32-34)

Generosity pushes you to “sell” and “give” to others in need which leads to you receiving “treasure in the heavens” (12:32).

“Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.”-Jesus in Matthew 19:29

Who or what you “treasure” most is who or what your “heart” loves most (12:34; Prov. 23:7).

Finding True Life Requires You to…

1)  Give What You Cannot Keep

“I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.”-Jesus in Luke 16:9

Allocate the portfolio of your life in the place where you will get the best return.

2)  Invest for Eternal Dividends

“Be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”-1 Timothy 6:18-19

“He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”-Missionary and Christian Martyr, Jim Elliot
