Several years ago, the Hispanic population of Shelby County began to grow by leaps and bounds. At present those who speak Spanish number well over 100,000. In the year 2000, Luis Quezada, a member of Kirby Woods from Ecuador, sensed God leading him to minister to his fellow Spanish speakers and began the first Hispanic Sunday School at Kirby Woods.
God soon led Luis and his wife Tracy to move to New York, but God raised up another Sunday School Teacher. Chris Gault, an area businessman accepted the responsibility and also began to teach English as a Second Languages classes to internationals. God blessed Chris's faithfulness, and the Hispanic ministry continued to grow.
Through the Hispanic work at Kirby Woods, Chris and his wife Cynthia developed a deeper love for Hispanics and surrendered their lives to missions. They enrolled in a language school in San Jose, Costa Rica, and soon became missionaries with Latin American Missions (LAM). To this day, they continue to serve in the country of Costa Rica.
In January 2005, KWBC sponsored a Hispanic church plant known as La Iglesia Bautista Nueve Vida with Matt Akers as the pastor. At present, the church has four Sunday School classes, a worship service, and a Bible study on Wednesday nights.
